Pdf Summary
Hypercalcemia is a condition where there is an excessive amount of calcium in the blood. It is found in approximately 15% of hospitalized adult patients and can be caused by various factors such as primary hyperparathyroidism and malignancy. Symptoms of hypercalcemia can range from nonspecific fatigue and constipation to more severe symptoms such as polyuria, dehydration, and altered mental status. Diagnosis involves confirming elevated calcium levels and checking the levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Treatment options include hydration, bisphosphonates, calcitonin, glucocorticoids, and, in severe cases, hemodialysis. The underlying condition causing hypercalcemia should also be treated. There are various causes and treatments for hypercalcemia, and further reading is recommended for a more comprehensive understanding.
