Acute Brain Dysfunction: A Roadmap to Prevention and Treatment of Coma, Delirium, and Agitation in the Critically Ill Patient - On Demand 2026
At the ICU bedside, subtle signs forecast coma, delirium, and agitation long before crises emerge. This clinically grounded course helps you recognize high-risk patterns, prevent avoidable harm, and manage acute episodes as you apply validated assessments, refine sedation plans, and implement bundle-based prevention. You'll evaluate cases, design unit-ready protocols, and leave prepared to lift neurologic outcomes.

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, learners should be able to:
  1. Define and differentiate the key forms of acute brain dysfunction in critical illness, including coma, delirium, and agitation, and recognize their impact on morbidity, mortality, and long-term cognitive outcomes.
  2. Identify and utilize validated bedside tools (e.g., CAM-ICU, BCAM, RASS) to assess and monitor delirium, coma, and agitation in both ICU and non-ICU settings.
  3. Implement evidence-based prevention strategies, such as minimizing sedative exposure, promoting early mobility, and addressing pain, to reduce the incidence and severity of delirium.
  4. Develop prevention and management plans that incorporate both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to minimize delirium and agitation, while promoting wakefulness and cognitive recovery.
