Across the perioperative pathway, one preventable threat still claims lives—VTE. In this concise, practice-ready course, recognize its impact, describe key risks, and synthesize ASH and ACCP guidance into clear bedside choices for pharmacologic, mechanical, combined, and extended prophylaxis for general, orthopedic, oncologic, and bariatric surgery. You’ll formulate goals, summarize protocols, and outline timing to improve outcomes and meet quality metrics.

Stormy anticoagulation decisions demand precision. Through lively, case-based challenges with audience response, you will synthesize new evidence to prescribe wisely in VTE and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, identify patients who should stop unnecessary aspirin, and risk stratify acute PE with confidence—sharpening judgment you can apply on rounds the very next day.

On rounds, a puzzling CBC can stall decisions. In this on‑demand session, case-based teaching and a pediatric hematologist’s lens help you differentiate causes of abnormal counts, evaluate inpatient neutropenia with confidence, and describe the drivers, prevention, and management of hospital‑acquired venous thrombosis—then apply current evidence to design clearer, safer care for hospitalized children.

CT just flagged a tiny subsegmental PE—treat or watch? In this case-based live Q&A with experts, you will define ISSPE, recognize key imaging features, and risk-stratify patients to decide when anticoagulation is warranted and when structured surveillance is safer. We translate major guidelines into a practical protocol and interpret emerging data and trials so you finish ready to apply bedside decisions with confidence.

Amid admissions and perioperative pivots, are you ready to sustain gender-affirming hormone therapy safely? In this clinician-focused session, manage VTE and cardiovascular risks across estrogen and testosterone regimens, interpret GAHT-informed labs, and deliver affirming room assignments, privacy, and discharge plans. Apply current guidelines at the bedside to ensure safer decisions, stronger collaboration, and better outcomes for transgender inpatients.

Rounds move faster when anticoagulation calls are crisp. In this case-driven update powered by recent trials and guidelines, compare DOACs vs VKAs after bioprosthetic valve procedures (and apply caution with very early DOAC use), apply CAD/PCI de-escalation strategies and when DOAC alone suffices, prioritize warfarin for antiphospholipid syndrome, navigate ESKD choices with apixaban, time DOAC starts after AF stroke, and avoid routine post-stroke bridging - leaving with step-by-step pathways.

From ED arrival to repair and secondary prevention, this evidence‑based, case‑driven module equips hospitalists for comanagement to summarize the stakes, identify candidates for early surgery, and perform focused preop assessments without low‑yield delays. You’ll recognize VTE and delirium risks, reduce pain and pressure injuries with nerve blocks and multimodal care alongside surgery and anesthesia, and initiate bone‑strengthening therapy for better outcomes.

Before the first incision, the right anticoagulant decision can avert stroke and hemorrhage. In this case-based CME, determine when to interrupt or continue therapy by integrating patient, procedure, and thrombotic risks; chart precise stop‑restart timelines for warfarin and DOACs; and apply bridging only when truly indicated. Understand current evidence and standardized calendars to align teams, reduce errors, and deliver safer perioperative care.

When seconds count, hospitalists synthesize neurosurgical know-how to act decisively. In this interactive, CME-accredited module, you will summarize SAH, brain herniation, and cord compression; manage perfusion targets with nimodipine to curb delayed ischemia; differentiate SIADH from cerebral salt wasting while managing DI; describe shunt function and malfunctions; recommend anticoagulant reversal and VTE prophylaxis; and select hypertonic saline, mannitol, or dexamethasone to improve outcomes.

Bedside clues become life‑saving moves in this ICU masterclass on post‑op abdominal care. You’ll anticipate risk from drains, wounds, and the abdomen, detect leaks and bleeding with objective checks, deliver ventilation‑sparing analgesia, resuscitate precisely, and extubate confidently. We also prevent IAH/ACS, investigate fever wisely, feed early, and reduce VTE. Partner with surgery, anesthesia, and nursing to speed recovery and curb setbacks.

Cancer surgery rarely pauses for calibrating risk. Confidently design perioperative plans that account for cancer therapies as you describe cardiac hazards from anthracyclines, fluoropyrimidines, and prior radiation, including post-stent antiplatelet decisions, identify bleomycin lung injury and TKI effusions, review transfusion and antithrombotic strategies, anticipate immune-related events, and manage VTE, infection, and healing—then apply crisp checklists at the bedside.

Hospitalists are the fastest growing portion of the physician work force. Some estimate there will be 50,000 hospitalists needed in the next 10 years. As the number of hospitalists grows, so too will the clinical settings in which we practice. Consultative medicine is a service provided by many hospitalists, and a future in which almost all surgical patients are co-managed by hospitalists is already a reality for some. For many of us, our training in consultative medicine during residency was limited. We hope this curriculum will help you to feel more confident about your knowledge and skills and will lead to better patient outcomes. We welcome your comments and suggestions for future topics.
