Description
Along with the live skills exam, this knowledge exam represents the final step in the Point-of-Care-Ultrasound Certificate of Completion for Hospitalists, developed in joint partnership with the American College of Chest Physicians.

Before registering for and completing this exam, all other POCUS COC requirements for the certificate must be completed:

  1. Complete Online Learning Module: SHM 's Principles of Point-of-Care Ultrasound SHM series OR CHEST's Critical Care Ultrasonography: Image Acquisition and Interpretation
  2. Attend CHEST's Ultrasonography: Essentials in Critical Care
  3. Attend an Approved Regional POCUS Course
  4. Complete Online Image Portfolio

NOTE: This exam does not offer CME or MOC credit.

Knowledge Assessment Information
This exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions. The questions will ask you to select the SINGLE best answer from the options. At the end of the exam, you will have an opportunity to review all the questions, answers, and rationales in their entirety. The allotted time to complete the exam is 2.5 hours, which begins when you start the exam. 

The following abbreviations may be used in the test:

  • bpm: beats per minute
  • cc: cubic centimeter
  • degrees C: degrees Celsius
  • degrees F: degrees Fahrenheit
  • Hgb: hemoglobin
  • IVC: inferior vena cava
  • LA: left atrium
  • LV: left ventricle
  • O2: oxygen
  • POCUS: point-of-care ultrasound
  • RA: right atrium
  • RV: right ventricle
  • US: ultrasound


Knowledge Assessment FAQs:

1. When does my allotted 2.5 hours for the exam begin?
Answer: Your allotted exam time (2.5 hours) begins when you see the first exam question.

2. What is the passing score for this exam?

Answer: The passing score is 75% or higher.

3. What if I score below the passing grade?

Answer: The SHM POCUS program coordinator will follow up with you on the next steps to retake the exam.

4. Is there rationale for the exam questions?
Answer: There is commentary for each question that will be available at the end of the exam. You will be able to review after the allotted exam time.

5. When can I take my Knowledge Assessment?
Answer: you can take your exam at any time - however, we highly recommend that you take your exam:

  • In a quiet, well-lit, and private testing space where you can finish the exam uninterrupted
  • During a time when you are not required to answer calls or emails or interact with others, as the online proctoring system will flag this as suspicious exam behavior


6. If I have technical issues with the exam, who should I contact?
Answer: If you run into any technical issues with the exam please email pocus@hospitalmedicine.org. Please note if you are taking the exam after SHM business hours (9am to 5pm EST Monday-Friday) a member of the SHM Education Department will reach out on the next business day.
