Achy Breaky Hips: A Hospitalist’s Guide to Hip Fractures - On Demand 2026
Falls break hips; hospitalists help restore lives. In this fast-paced guide, we discuss epidemiology, review anatomy and surgical options, and evaluate timing that changes outcomes. We consider when to delay or forgo surgery in advanced frailty, and address post‑op essentials—VTE prophylaxis, early mobilization, and bone health—to provide confident, evidence‑based co‑management at the bedside.

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, learners should be able to:
  1. Understand the basic anatomy and surgical approaches to the management of hip fractures, as well as the epidemiology and outcomes of patients who are treated with surgical and non-surgical approaches.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of timely hip fracture repair for surgical candidates and the evidence behind these recommended surgical timeframes.
  3. Define situations in which surgical repair of hip fractures should be delayed to address other urgent medical concerns.
  4. Describe key elements of postoperative hip fracture care including VTE prophylaxis, early mobilization and physical therapy engagement, and bone metabolic health interventions with proven clinical benefits.
  5. Describe situations in which alternatives to hip fracture surgery should be considered including in minimally symptomatic patients with advanced frailty, dementia, or other severely life-limiting comorbidities.
