Rapid Clinical Updates: End-of-Life Care in the Hospital

This session will focus on enhancing hospitalists’ delivery of compassionate, patient-centered medical care at the end of life. Key topics will include recognizing signs of imminent death, managing pain and symptoms, addressing emotional and spiritual needs, and effective communication with healthcare team members, patients, and families. We will review ethical decision-making, cultural sensitivity, and interprofessional collaboration. Using case studies, we will illustrate best practices in palliative care. Participants will learn practical skills to support dignified end of life experiences, with tools to navigate complex care decisions and improve overall quality of care for patients in their final moments.

DEA Requirement - OUD and SUD Education

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recently announced updated rules for all registered clinicians. Starting June 27, 2023, clinicians applying or renewing their DEA registration will need to make a one-time attestation that they have attended at least eight hours of approved training. This will be due at the time of renewal, which will vary by clinician. As an accredited CME provider, the Society of Hospital Medicine has compiled a list of sessions that meet this requirement. Rapid Clinical Updates: Delirium and Inpatient Psychotropics

This session will discuss the burden of delirium among hospitalized patients, current preventive and therapeutic approaches to delirium, and the long-term impact of delirium. We will also discuss strategies for prevention of delirium in the hospital setting and how to recognize delirium in hospitalized patients, as well as pearls and pitfalls of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic strategies to manage delirium and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). At the end of the presentation, the audience will be able to identify delirium, assess its severity, and appreciate the long-term adverse consequences of delirium.
