Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, learners should be able to
  • Understand the indications for using ultrasound in the guidance of bedside procedures
  • Describe the optimal machine settings, probe selection, and probe orientation and placement for ultrasound guidance of bedside procedures
  • Identify the structures viewed in evaluation for paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture, central venous access and peripheral IV placement
  • Understand how to use ultrasound to evaluate for the appropriateness and safety of performing a paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture, central venous catheterization and peripheral IV placement
  • Understand the limitations and pitfalls of using ultrasound for guidance of bedside procedures
