The SHM POCUS Portfolio is designed to foster self-directed learning while providing feedback and advanced skills training. You will assemble a portfolio of specific images to be reviewed and approved by a faculty member via the internet. Expect a productive educational experience that will foster ongoing scanning practice and yield high-quality image acquisition. You will need to have access to an ultrasound machine with image storage capability. The emphasis for portfolio development will be on image quality.

The online portfolio is a component of the SHM-Chest Point-of-Care Ultrasound Certificate of Completion (COC). Eligibility to sit for the final assessment requires that participants purchase and complete all live course components, online learning modules, and completion of this portfolio. You are required to complete the portfolio within one year from the date of purchase.

If you plan to use a handheld ultrasound device to build your image portfolio, please check with the manufacturer and your local institutional contacts to ensure you will be able to export video files to upload to the SHM portfolio. Some learners have reported difficulty exporting images with certain handhelds and due to institutional firewalls. Additionally, you will be required to upload clips in MP4 or MOV format.

Your portfolio consists of two phases - Discovery (Phase I) and Practice & Proficiency (Phase II). When you begin your portfolio you will only have access to Phase I. Phase II will be available upon completion of the first phase - all the views within Phase I must have the required number of accepted images. Upon completion of both phases, you will have access to the CME evaluation to claim CME credits and ABIM MOC points for your work.

To assign your portfolio a reviewer you must complete a minimum of one (1) Image Set (excluding Skin & Soft Tissue). When your Image Set(s) is/are complete your portfolio will enter a queue to be assigned a reviewer – reviewer assignment can take up to two weeks. Once your portfolio is assigned a reviewer you will receive notifications as your submissions are evaluated. As you complete sets in both phases they will be sent to your reviewer.

You are required to complete your portfolio within one year from your date of purchase. If you are unable to complete your portfolio within the one-year deadline, you may need to purchase an additional year ($800.00). Please reach out to pocus@hospitalmedicine.org for portfolio completion and repurchase instructions and questions.
