To provide guidance in creating, leading, or participating in a co-management model, SHM recently released the Building and Sustaining Co-Management Programs in Hospital Medicine: A Technical Report and Operational Guide. This webinar, which features contributors of the SHM resource and experts from across the country and abroad, will focus on the opportunities and challenges in hospitalist co-management models and the role that interservice agreements play in defining roles, workflows, and in conflict resolution.

How to be a Hospitalist Opioid Use Disorder Champion: Improving the Quality of Care for Patients

The hospitalist role in providing effective care for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) has never been more important. Reducing Unnecessary Telemetry Monitoring: An SHM Choosing Wisely Quality Improvement Implementation Module

Mounting evidence shows that the American healthcare system costs too much for the results it achieves in terms of patient outcomes and access. Many different parts of this system need attention, and it can be difficult to know where to begin. However, the inpatient / hospital environment is a “high intensity” healthcare delivery setting, and the “Choosing Wisely” initiative of the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation (ABIMF) offers a list of low value healthcare practices which make great targets for improvement efforts. In this activity, we will tackle one of the top five practices chosen for Choosing Wisely by the Society of Hospital Medicine: continuous telemetry monitoring.This activity will review the guideline recommendations and the literature supporting the harms, benefits, and proper utilization of telemetry monitoring.

Rapid Clinical Updates: Delirium and Inpatient Psychotropics

This session will discuss the burden of delirium among hospitalized patients, current preventive and therapeutic approaches to delirium, and the long-term impact of delirium. We will also discuss strategies for prevention of delirium in the hospital setting and how to recognize delirium in hospitalized patients, as well as pearls and pitfalls of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic strategies to manage delirium and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). At the end of the presentation, the audience will be able to identify delirium, assess its severity, and appreciate the long-term adverse consequences of delirium.
