Acute Pain in Patients with Opioid Use Disorder: Leveling Up Analgesia While Dialing Down Risk
Bedside decisions shouldn’t trade relief for risk. In this on-demand course, clinicians describe the roles of buprenorphine and methadone, recognize openings to start MOUD during acute and acute-on-chronic pain in hospitalized patients with serious illness, and implement team-based plans with outpatient partners. We then apply palliative care communication to discuss comorbid pain and OUD, advancing safer analgesia and more dignified hospital care.

After completing this activity, learners should be able to:
  1. Describe the pharmacology and clinical use of buprenorphine and methadone, both for pain and for opioid use disorder (OUD).
  2. Recognize opportunities to prescribe medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in the management of acute pain among patients experiencing OUD.
  3. Implement treatment plans for acute pain in patients using MOUD, in coordination with outpatient longitudinal providers.
  4. Apply principles of patient-centered communication to discussions of co-morbid pain and OUD, allowing for compassionate and respectful whole-person care for these vulnerable patients.
