The project describes a custom <strong>Triage Dashboard</strong> built within the Epic electronic health record at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to improve inpatient triage. Hospitalists there cover more than 30 service lines across five hospitals, and triaging patients is a manual, complex task with risks of missed steps and safety issues.

The dashboard was designed to simplify this workflow by giving hospitalists <strong>real-time operational information</strong> in one place. It pulls from live reports, scheduling data, and external web resources to display key items such as: potentially unassigned patients, active census, pending discharges and admissions, transfers, patient/provider location assignments, and patients listed on multiple attending service lines. Reports refresh automatically to keep information current.

The goal was to create an EHR-based tool that helps hospitalists <strong>assign patients to the right inpatient services more efficiently and safely</strong>. Since implementation, the dashboard has become part of daily operations. Over a three-month period, it was viewed more than 1,000 times, averaging about 11 uses per day—roughly matching the number of triage shifts each day.

The authors conclude that embedding the tool directly into the EHR and clinicians’ primary workspace improved <strong>provider satisfaction, efficiency, and situational awareness</strong>, while reducing the burden of manual triage.
