Utilizing Voice Recognition to Improve Practice Efficiency and Reduce Burnout

This 18-month pilot study examined whether voice recognition (VR) software could reduce documentation burden and burnout among 34 hospitalists across three Mount Sinai hospitals. Using the M*Modal Fluency Direct system, the team evaluated adoption and impact through surveys on task load, burnout, system usability, and focus groups.<br /><br />VR was used for 4,845 notes overall, but adoption was uneven: about half of participants did not use it at all. Among users, 88% moderately or strongly agreed that VR improved productivity and note-writing efficiency, and 81% felt it reduced after-hours charting. Prior experience with VR was associated with better perceived note-writing efficiency. There was also a statistically significant improvement in perceived burnout after three months of use (p = 0.02).<br /><br />Use varied by note type, with higher adoption for discharge summaries and progress notes than for other note categories. Challenges to implementation included a learning curve, difficulty dictating in shared spaces, and limited software availability only at designated workstations.<br /><br />Overall, the study found that VR is feasible in hospital medicine and can reduce EHR burden and clinician burnout for those who adopt it successfully. The authors conclude that VR may be transformative for documentation efficiency, comprehensiveness, and ease of use.
