Using Video to Teach and Improve Structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The poster describes the use of video to teach Structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds (SIBR) on a Medicine Accountable Care Unit (ACU) at Pasqua Hospital in Canada. SIBR is a brief, scripted interdisciplinary communication process used by the care team at the bedside to improve coordination, patient involvement, and safety. It includes: a status update from each team member, a safety checklist addressing common preventable complications (such as VTE prophylaxis, urinary catheters, and vascular access), and development of a 24-hour care/discharge plan.

The ACU was introduced in 2016 on a 35-bed general medicine unit to strengthen interdisciplinary teamwork. In 2017, a SIBR certification program was launched for hospitalists, residents, nurses, and other team members. To support education and certification, a video recording protocol was developed. The goals of using video were to support training and certification, standardize expectations for SIBR performance across disciplines, and help clinicians build a “structured care narrative” that includes the patient.

Video recordings of real clinical examples were used as teaching tools. Patients and clinicians consented to being recorded, and only clinicians appeared in the videos. Performance was assessed by a certified clinician using a standardized online scoring tool with written feedback. When possible, the teaching clinician reviewed the recording with the candidate to explain scores and suggest improvements. Once competency was demonstrated, certification was granted.

The videos were also incorporated into new staff education, using comparisons between novice and experienced SIBR performers. A teaching module based on these recordings is in development for an interdisciplinary communication curriculum.

Overall, the poster concludes that video is a powerful method for teaching communication, teamwork, and bedside care processes, with future potential for ongoing skill maintenance, auditing, and research on interdisciplinary teamwork.
