Unveiling Post-Surgical Procedure-Related Mortality in Adults (>25 Years) in Us: Epidemiological Trends and Disparities Based on a Comprehensive Analysis Using the CDC Wonder Database (1999-2020)

Pdf Summary
This study examined U.S. deaths related to post-surgical complications among adults aged 25 and older from 1999 to 2020 using CDC WONDER death certificate data (ICD-10 code Y83). The authors analyzed age-adjusted mortality rates, overall trends, and differences by sex, race/ethnicity, and geographic region using Joinpoint regression and Average Annual Percent Change (AAPC).

Overall, post-surgical procedure-related mortality decreased only slightly over the study period, with the age-adjusted mortality rate falling from 12.12 per 100,000 in 1999 to 10.93 in 2020. This corresponded to an AAPC of -0.51, suggesting a modest downward trend. During the period, there were 381,093 total deaths.

The analysis found important disparities. Mortality rates were higher among males, Black individuals, and people living in nonmetropolitan areas. Regionally, the Midwest showed the greatest increase in mortality trends. These patterns indicate that although overall mortality has improved marginally, progress has been uneven across population groups and locations.

The study emphasizes that post-surgical complications remain a serious patient safety issue, often linked to bleeding, sepsis, organ failure, or anesthesia-related adverse events. The findings support the need for stronger surgical protocols, improved postoperative monitoring, and targeted interventions aimed at high-risk and underserved populations.
