Unintentional Ingestion of Psychoactive Cannabis Products Among Adults: Scoping Review
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This document describes an ongoing scoping review on unintentional ingestion of psychoactive cannabis products among adults. The background notes that cannabis products are increasingly available in edible and supplement forms, and while accidental ingestion in children and adolescents is well described, there has been little synthesis focused on adults. The review aims to answer several questions: what adult cases look like, what treatments are effective, how hospital courses typically progress, and what exposure sources healthcare providers should ask about to identify and treat patients. The team used Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review framework and searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Ovid. Records were managed in EndNote and Covidence. Two authors screened titles and abstracts, two authors will review full texts, and disagreements will be resolved by a third team member. Data extraction will also be checked by a second reviewer. Inclusion criteria focus on adults 18 years and older with: - intentional ingestion of cannabis/cannabinoid products for psychoactive purposes, - unintentional ingestion of psychoactive cannabis in edibles or supplements, - or intentional ingestion of CBD-containing or synthetic cannabinoid products for non-recreational purposes. The review excludes children and adolescents and outpatient-only cases. Preliminary findings suggest that few adult cases of unintentional ingestion have been reported. Most published cases involve either children or adults who intentionally overconsumed cannabis. Among adult accidental ingestions, many appear to involve CBD products adulterated with THC or food prepared by someone else that contained THC. The search process identified 675 studies, removed 304 duplicates, screened 371 titles/abstracts, excluded 253 irrelevant papers, and advanced 118 papers to full-text review. Final included studies and data extraction are still pending.
