Pdf Summary
Transfer Center Tycoon: An Innovative Serious Game for an Educational Gap Hospitalists and trainees frequently handle transfer center calls that require clinical decision-making, systems navigation, and professionalism. However, formal education on transfer center work is limited, and many residents report discomfort and poor preparedness for these interactions. To address this gap, the authors developed Transfer Center Tycoon, a “serious game” designed to provide a standardized educational experience around transfer center calls. The game simulates common pediatric transfer center scenarios along with typical operational constraints. During play, participants receive real-time and end-of-scenario formative feedback. The project’s purpose was to create this educational tool and assess its acceptability among trainees. Early findings suggest that trainees found the game helpful for learning about transfer center processes and clinical operations. The authors note that serious games may offer a practical alternative to traditional simulation, especially for variable or difficult-to-standardize experiences like transfer center communication. Next steps include analyzing game data to determine whether trainees actually learned from the experience, expanding the game to internal medicine trainees, and exploring additional uses for the format in other educational gaps. Overall, the project proposes a novel, engaging approach to teaching an under-addressed but important clinical skill.
