The Silent Risk: Exploring Antidepressant Poisoning-Related Mortality in the U.S. Through CDC Wonder Data: A Deep Dive Into Data (1999-2020)
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This retrospective study examined U.S. mortality associated with antidepressant poisoning from 1999 to 2020 using CDC WONDER data and ICD-10 T43 codes. The authors focused on adults aged 25 years and older and analyzed age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) by year, sex, race/ethnicity, region, and geography using Joinpoint regression.

Overall antidepressant-related mortality increased significantly over time, rising from 1.0 per 100,000 in 1999 to 2.5 in 2020, with an average annual percent change (AAPC) of 4.38%. Death rates were higher in females than males, and the increase over time was steeper among women. By race/ethnicity, non-Hispanic White individuals accounted for the largest number of deaths, but non-Hispanic American Indian populations had the highest overall mortality rate. Regionally, the Northeast and West had the highest AAMRs, while metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas showed similar rates. Across states, mortality varied widely, from 0.7 in Alabama to 7.4 in West Virginia.

The study concludes that antidepressant-related poisoning mortality has risen substantially in the U.S., underscoring the seriousness of the overdose epidemic and the need for broad public health interventions.
