The Poise Framework for Sharing Peer Feedback
The Poise Framework for Sharing Peer Feedback
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This document describes the importance of peer feedback in clinical settings and presents a workshop designed to improve it using the POISE communication framework.

Peer feedback is often an overlooked opportunity for professional development and quality improvement, but it has strong potential to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes. However, giving and receiving feedback requires trust, and clinicians are more likely to accept feedback from colleagues they know well. Barriers include workplace culture, fear of damaging collegial relationships, and the fact that few clinicians receive formal training in feedback skills.

To address this gap, the authors developed an interactive workshop for hospital medicine and geriatrics clinicians at an academic medical center. The workshop aimed to build skills in both giving and receiving positive and constructive peer feedback, while also promoting healthy professional relationships and a growth mindset. The session included polling, case discussions, introduction to the POISE framework, demonstrations, guided role-play, and reflection on the emotional aspects of feedback.

The workshop’s impact was assessed using pre- and post-workshop surveys measuring prior experiences with peer feedback and participants’ confidence in using it. Results showed that the workshop improved confidence in both giving and receiving constructive feedback. Participants especially valued the simplicity of the POISE framework, along with the demonstrations and role-play activities.

The main conclusion is that structured training can help clinicians become more comfortable with peer feedback and may support better teamwork, communication, and clinical improvement. Future work will use follow-up surveys to determine whether the workshop leads to lasting changes in feedback practices.
