The Impact of a Provider-Led, Nursing Unit-Specific Educational Intervention on Clinical Decline, Patient Care, and Nursing/Provider Satisfaction
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This document describes a provider-led educational intervention at Vanderbilt University Medical Center aimed at improving paging communication between nurses and providers, especially for early-career night-shift nurses. The project was developed by Hospital Medicine advanced practice providers in response to frequent paging, which often disrupts workflow and may not accurately reflect clinical urgency.

The curriculum consisted of unit-based, interactive sessions held early in the night shift and repeated regularly. These sessions taught nurses how to communicate effectively and how to categorize page urgency appropriately using VUMC paging levels: FYI (no action needed), AYC (response within one hour), ASAP (response within 10 minutes), and STAT (immediate life-saving action). The intervention focused on reducing inappropriate overuse of high-urgency pages, which can lead to poor prioritization of patient care needs.

Early results were encouraging. Nurses and providers reported improved collaboration, clearer and more relevant page content, and better overall communication quality. However, internal paging data have not yet shown significant changes in urgency-level usage, likely because of a small sample size and high nursing turnover. Patient outcomes have not yet been measured but will be evaluated as the project expands.

The broader goal is to improve provider-nursing communication, support safer prioritization, and contribute to a high-reliability care culture. Planned next steps include holding these sessions at least twice a year or quarterly, checking in regularly with nurse managers, and rounding with nurses at the start of each shift to address concerns early and reduce unnecessary paging.
