The Hospitalist Think Tank: A Scalable Innovation to Drive Engagement, Solutions, and Well-Being
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The Hospitalist Think Tank is a grassroots, peer-led innovation forum developed by the University of Miami hospital medicine division to improve engagement, problem-solving, and physician well-being. It was created in response to a common challenge in hospital medicine: hospitalists often identify operational inefficiencies but lack structured opportunities to influence decisions, which can contribute to frustration and burnout.

The Think Tank is a voluntary monthly meeting held separately for hospitalists on “alpha” and “beta” weeks. It is designed around four key principles: designated liaisons to coordinate follow-up, a protected hospitalist-only space for open discussion, supplemental communication through a dedicated WhatsApp group, and accountability through regular progress updates with division leadership.

The forum has already produced practical improvements. Examples include implementing a more flexible scheduling system to support work-life balance, working with radiology to add mandatory delay notes in the electronic health record to improve communication about delayed studies, and distributing discharge nurse contact information to streamline discharge planning and outpatient follow-up.

Overall, the Think Tank provides a scalable model for hospitalist-driven innovation. By giving frontline clinicians a structured, safe, and collaborative space to raise concerns and develop solutions, it has improved efficiency, communication, satisfaction, and care coordination. The authors conclude that this model can be adapted by other hospital medicine programs to strengthen engagement, reduce burnout, and accelerate meaningful change.
