Emory University’s Division of Hospital Medicine launched the Hospital Medicine Publishing Fund in early 2022 to help junior faculty publish scholarly work, especially clinically focused case reports and small studies that are often difficult to place in mainstream journals. Junior faculty could apply through a short online form, upload their manuscript, and have it reviewed by division leaders. To reduce the risk of predatory publishing, the division screened journals carefully and limited eligible submissions to reputable outlets relevant to hospital medicine. Funding was reserved for division members as first or senior authors.<br /><br />By early 2023, the division added funding caps of $1,000 for case reports/series and $1,500 for original research so the money could support more authors. The program received 19 applications covering 13 unique papers, mostly case reports/series. Fourteen junior faculty were involved as co-authors. Eighteen submissions received provisional funding, and one received partial funding.<br /><br />Outcomes were strong: several manuscripts were accepted by first-choice journals, others were accepted after resubmission to second or third journals, and seven papers were published with funds disbursed. A few were declined because they were eventually published in journals without fees or obtained other funding. In total, $8,090 had been allocated to date.<br /><br />Overall, the fund appears to be an effective, practical way to increase scholarly output and support junior faculty in academic hospital medicine.
