The Embrace Series: Ending Medical Bias and Racism by Advocating for Change and Equity
Back to course
Pdf Summary
EMBRACE (Ending Medical Bias and Racism by Advocating for Change and Equity) was a resident-driven anti-racism curriculum developed at UNC for internal medicine and pediatric trainees in fall 2020. It was created in response to the ACGME expectation that residents demonstrate respect and responsiveness to diverse patient populations, and to address the challenge of building effective diversity, equity, and inclusion education in graduate medical education.

The series had four sessions. The first established shared language for anti-racism and asked participants to reflect on their implicit biases and their role in systemic racism. The second used a patient case to examine how structural racism and implicit bias can affect care. The third was a flipped-journal club that explored the historical origins of race-based medical metrics and emphasized that racism, not race, drives many health disparities. The fourth provided practical tools to help residents advocate for marginalized patients and respond when they witness racism.

The goal was to help residents understand how bias and structural racism influence patient care and to equip them with concrete skills to be effective anti-racist advocates and allies in medicine.

Outcomes after the four sessions were positive: respondents reported a 40% increase in belief that their institution was effectively addressing racism in medicine, a 13% increase in willingness and confidence to respond to acts of racism, and a 25% increase in awareness of their own implicit bias. Participants also valued the opportunity for honest, open discussion, and many noted that the experience highlighted how much work remains.
