Temp-Idr: An Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounding Method to Improve Patient Experience
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document describes TEMP-IDR, an interdisciplinary bedside rounding model designed to improve patient experience through better doctor-patient communication. Since communication strongly affects patient satisfaction, adherence, and health outcomes, the project focused on improving the HCAHPS Doctor Communication Domain and reducing patient complaints.

A multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, case managers, and patient experience specialists created unit-based “microsystems” that included the patient and family, attending physician, bedside nurse, case manager, and charge nurse/clinical leader. The team developed standardized scripts for each discipline to support timely, clear, and effective communication. Bedside rounds were held at a set time each day and lasted about 3 to 5 minutes per patient. Implementation occurred in phases, starting with four medical-surgical units and expanding to three additional units. Quality assurance included physician leader rounding and biweekly nursing huddles.

Early results from the first six months showed improvement in HCAHPS Doctor Communication Domain Top Box scores in hospitalist physician services and focused units. The project also led to a significant reduction in patient complaints. Physicians reported fewer secure chat messages from nurses, suggesting better coordination and communication.

The authors conclude that TEMP-IDR improved patient experience and reduced complaints. Key factors in its success were the standardized script and weekly huddles. Main challenges included changes in workflow and continuity of care. The team plans to expand the program to more units while continuing to refine it using feedback from patients and staff.
