Telephone and Video Visits in the Hospital: Patient Demographics and Perceptions of Quality
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study examined how hospitalized patients perceived telemedicine visits with their inpatient care teams during the COVID-19 pandemic. Telemedicine, including phone and video visits, became important for reducing exposure risks and helping clinicians connect with patients in the hospital.

Researchers surveyed randomly selected general medicine inpatients at two urban hospitals from February 2020 to August 2021 as part of a larger study about patients’ understanding of their care teams. Of 173 surveys, 134 patients answered questions about whether any care team members visited by phone or video instead of in person, which team members were involved, and how they rated the quality of the encounter.

Results showed no significant demographic differences between patients who did and did not report telemedicine visits. However, no non-English-speaking patients reported having a telemedicine visit. Most patients rated the quality of telemedicine encounters positively, describing them as good, very good, or excellent. Specialists were the most common users of telemedicine, accounting for 39% of reported visits.

Overall, the findings suggest that inpatient telemedicine was generally well received by patients and became a meaningful tool for care delivery during the pandemic, though access may have been uneven for non-English speakers.
