Teaching on Consults: The Effect of Multiple Educational Interventions on Satisfaction With Inpatient Consultations Among Internal Medicine Residents
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study examined whether a resident-led “Teaching on Consults” workshop, combined with printed memory aids, could improve internal medicine residents’ satisfaction with inpatient consultations.

Background: Consult interactions are a key part of medical education, but trainees often struggle with both placing and receiving consults. Poor interactions may reduce satisfaction and limit teaching opportunities. The authors created a 90-minute workshop to teach residents a framework for better consult communication and education, using two previously published memory aids: one for placing consults and one for responding to them.

Objective: To evaluate the workshop’s effect on resident satisfaction with consults.

Methods: Residents were grouped based on exposure to the workshop and/or memory aids. Their satisfaction was measured with a 5-point Likert scale across several domains, including overall satisfaction, professionalism, communication, hesitation, and teaching. Satisfaction rates were then compared between exposed and non-exposed groups using Fisher’s exact test.

Results: Residents who were exposed to the workshop and/or the memory aids reported significantly higher satisfaction with the overall consult process, the consultant’s professionalism, communication, and teaching compared with residents who were not exposed.

Conclusion: A low-resource, resident-driven educational intervention using a brief workshop and validated memory aids can significantly improve residents’ satisfaction with multiple aspects of inpatient medicine consults. The intervention was designed to enhance peer teaching while minimally disrupting workflow and may be effective in real-world clinical settings.
