Teaching Together: A Bite-Size Teaching, Peer-Led Hospitalist Faculty Development Model

Pdf Summary
This abstract describes a peer-led faculty development program for hospitalists in a Division of Hospital Medicine at VA Greater Los Angeles/UCLA. The authors note that many hospitalist groups lack structured faculty development because of time constraints and a mismatch with faculty needs, even though such programs can improve engagement, retention, and satisfaction.

To address this, they created a “Bite-Sized Teaching” model grounded in cognitive load theory and built around regular monthly division meetings. The program used peer-selected presenters, feedback, recorded sessions, slides for asynchronous access, and incentives through annual performance pay criteria. Sessions were organized around ACGME clinician educator competencies and covered practical topics such as SMART goals, quality narrative evaluations, converting cases into abstracts or posters, growth mindset, mentoring, sponsorship, cultural humility, and well-being. The goal was to make faculty development feasible, relevant, and easy to participate in.

After 14 months, 17 of 21 eligible hospitalists completed an anonymous survey, an 81% response rate. Results were very positive: 88% were satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of teaching, 100% were satisfied or very satisfied with the format, and 76% reported applying new skills from the sessions. Engagement was strong, with most faculty attending six sessions.

The authors conclude that a peer-led, bite-sized faculty development model is feasible and well-liked, with high participation and real-world application of skills. Future improvements include allowing more discussion time, expanding asynchronous options, and strengthening the community of practice.
