Supporting the Next Generation of Hospitalists: A Comprehensive Multi-Year Program
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document describes CHAMP, the Career Hospitalist Advisement and Mentorship Program, created to support internal medicine residents interested in hospital medicine. This need arose because hospital medicine is rapidly growing, with hospitalist numbers increasing by about 50% from 2012 to 2019, yet there are few formal resources to guide trainees pursuing this career path.

CHAMP uses a four-phase model. First, residents complete an initial assessment and are paired with faculty advisors. Second, they increase exposure to hospital medicine through opportunities such as a hospitalist elective, career tracks, and quality improvement initiatives. Third, the program helps with the hospitalist application process, including review of CVs and cover letters and interview coaching. Fourth, CHAMP provides longitudinal mentorship through regular advisor check-ins and career development workshops.

In its first year, 18 residents enrolled, supported by 11 core faculty advisors, along with 2 alumni representatives and 2 resident representatives. Early feedback from the hospitalist elective suggests that residents feel more prepared to function as attending hospitalists after participation.

The program’s future goals are to adapt based on resident feedback and expand locally, regionally, and nationally. Overall, CHAMP is presented as a structured, multi-year mentorship and career development program designed to fill an educational gap and support the next generation of hospitalists.
