Successful Design and Execution of an Institutional Teaching Competition

Pdf Summary
This document describes an annual institutional hospitalist teaching competition developed by Emory’s Division of Hospital Medicine to support faculty development and improve teaching skills among early-career academic hospitalists. The program addresses a common gap: hospitalists are expected to teach, but many lack formal training or experience in educational methods.

The competition has run for seven years, excluding 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It brings together junior faculty from multiple clinical sites, including community hospitals, a public safety-net hospital, university medical centers, and a VA hospital. Each participant delivers a brief, high-yield didactic presentation to peers and trainees.

The format is structured to promote both learning and engagement: each year uses a theme tied to high-value hospital medicine topics, topics are randomly assigned, presentations are limited to 8 minutes plus 2 minutes for discussion, and a diverse judging panel scores presenters on speech clarity, visual appeal, and content quality. The event originally took place in person but shifted to virtual delivery to increase attendance and audience interaction.

Over time, the event has expanded significantly. Thirty-six junior faculty members have participated, and audience size has grown from about 20–30 attendees to around 100 in the virtual format. The competition also now includes judges and participants from other institutions and learners at multiple training levels.

The authors conclude that a teaching competition can be an effective, enjoyable, and psychologically safe venue for hospitalist faculty development, especially for early-career clinicians building niche expertise, while also refreshing attendees’ knowledge in core hospital medicine topics.
