Statin Use and Outcomes in Stroke Patients With Ldl<70mg/Dl

Pdf Summary
This poster presents a prospective single-center observational study on the effect of statin use in acute stroke patients with baseline LDL levels around 70 mg/dL. The authors note that while statins are known to help prevent recurrent stroke, the ideal LDL target after stroke remains uncertain, especially for patients whose LDL is already low.

The study included adult stroke patients hospitalized between January 2021 and October 2022. Of 614 acute stroke admissions, 144 patients with LDL 70 mg/dL were analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups: those already on statins before admission and statin-naïve patients. Data were collected from electronic medical records, and follow-up calls were planned at 6, 12, and 18 months. Outcomes assessed included stroke type, mortality, readmission, and Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at discharge and follow-up.

Baseline characteristics such as age, BMI, and systolic blood pressure were similar between groups. Preliminary results suggested that statin use was associated with better outcomes during the index admission and lower overall morbidity and mortality. Statin-naïve patients appeared to have a higher proportion of severe stroke and slightly worse mRS scores at discharge. Statin use was also associated with a lower incidence of hemorrhagic stroke, independent of systolic blood pressure. At 6 months, mortality was lower in the statin group than in the statin-naïve group.

The authors conclude that statins may improve short-term outcomes even in stroke patients with LDL 70 mg/dL, but the findings are limited by sample size. They recommend longer follow-up to determine the long-term impact of statin therapy in this population.
