Respondents reported barriers throughout the research pipeline, including too few mentors, limited infrastructure, and a lack of applicants interested in research training.<br /><br />The public data analysis found declining research productivity and support over time. Mean federal funding per SHM member dropped from $14,642 in 2010 to $10,375 in 2019. Publications per member also fell slightly, from 1.81 in 2010 to 1.67 in 2019.<br /><br />Overall, the study concludes that although Hospital Medicine continues to expand clinically, its research footprint is not growing accordingly. The authors emphasize that stronger research training pipelines and better support systems will be necessary to build the specialty’s long-term research capacity.
