Scholarly Work Activation Team (Swat): A New Blueprint for Academic Success in Hospital Medicine
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The Scholarly Work Activation Team (SWAT) at UC San Diego Hospital Medicine is a new, team-based mentorship model designed to improve academic productivity among hospitalists. Instead of relying only on traditional one-on-one mentoring, SWAT uses five mid- to late-career faculty with expertise in education, quality improvement, publishing, health system operations, academic advancement, and mentorship to support short-term, high-impact scholarly projects.

The pilot program invited hospitalists with active academic projects to join regular bi-weekly meetings. SWAT provided targeted guidance, accountability, and access to broader institutional networks to help projects move from idea to dissemination. Examples included a case report on xylazine, a manuscript on virtual transition clinic impact on medication reconciliation, clinical vignette abstracts and posters, and support for a wound care medical directorship and curriculum development.

SWAT’s approach focused on rapid-cycle mentoring and multidimensional coaching. Faculty received help with journal selection, cover letters, manuscript editing, authorship decisions, project management, conference submissions, and practical resource development such as abstract/poster templates and a standardized consent process for case reports. Educational sessions also addressed common needs like time management, mentor-mentee best practices, and Lean Six Sigma training.

The pilot suggested that SWAT is a sustainable and effective way to identify hospitalists who would benefit from academic support and to help junior faculty complete and disseminate scholarly work. It also revealed content gaps that informed resource creation for the broader group. Next steps include formally assessing participant experience and tracking scholarly output to measure the model’s effectiveness.
