Reviewing Scholarly Writing Strategies for Histori ...
Reviewing Scholarly Writing Strategies for Historically Underrepresented Hospitalist Faculty
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This review examined strategies to improve scholarly writing and publication among hospitalists, with attention to women, Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC), underrepresented in medicine (URM) groups, and junior faculty. The authors note that scholarly writing is essential for promotion in academic medicine, yet underrepresented groups often face added experiential, psychological, logistical, and time-related barriers. Because hospitalists have heavy clinical demands, these barriers may be especially strong.

The team conducted a literature review using PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane. After removing duplicates and screening titles, abstracts, and full texts, 35 studies met inclusion criteria. Studies were included if they focused on hospital medicine or general internal medicine, scholarly writing, and a specific intervention.

Key findings showed that many effective interventions exist in health professions broadly, but very few were designed specifically for hospitalists, and none were aimed at the target underrepresented audiences. Promising approaches included mentoring by faculty with similar experiences, peer networking, small-group workshops, research-skills training, and support staff such as medical writers or research coaches. However, standalone writing programs often had limited success and high dropout rates unless paired with institutional support and protected time.

The review concludes that hospital medicine programs should adapt proven strategies from other fields and test interventions that better support BIPOC, women, URM, and early-career faculty. Doing so could help make scholarly participation more equitable and broaden whose voices shape the future of hospital medicine.
