Pdf Summary
This document describes the use of PechaKucha presentations in an Internal Medicine residency program to improve teaching efficiency and presentation skills for both residents and rotating medical students. PechaKucha is a Japanese presentation style consisting of 20 slides that auto-advance every 20 seconds, creating a total presentation time of 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Its visual, time-limited structure encourages concise, well-rehearsed, and focused presentations with minimal text.

The program introduced PechaKucha during intern bootcamp and early noon lecture series as a way to cover broad, commonly encountered “bread and butter” inpatient topics in a structured and engaging format. Acute pancreatitis was used as the pilot topic, with the presentation covering common causes, diagnostic criteria, fluid resuscitation choices, the WATERFALL trial, complications, and management of underlying etiologies. The format was designed to avoid overly dense slides, reduce cognitive overload, and prevent presentations that run too long or depend too heavily on slides.

Due to positive feedback from rotating students, the team expanded the model in July 2023 to include student capstone presentations at the end of their four-week rotation. In this version, third- and fourth-year medical students prepare a PechaKucha presentation on a topic encountered during their rotation, with supervision from a senior resident. These presentations are discussed on the students’ final Friday with the full inpatient team, promoting deeper discussion and more diverse feedback.

The authors conclude that PechaKucha is fun, interactive, challenging, and efficient. It can improve presentation skills, support topic mastery, and provide a standardized way to teach common inpatient topics. However, they emphasize that junior learners need mentorship or senior oversight to ensure educational goals are met.
