Remote Simulation During Covid-19 Provides Excellent Educational Value

Pdf Summary
The document describes a study from UCLA Medicine that compared in-person simulation training with a remote simulation format adopted during COVID-19. When social distancing halted the usual internal medicine simulation curriculum, the team moved sessions online starting in July 2020 using Zoom, shared screens, a private chat between the instructor and simulation technician, and basic simulation tools such as defibrillator software.

The goal was to assess whether remote simulation remained educationally effective compared with traditional in-person sessions. Evaluations from 268 anonymous learner surveys were analyzed: 162 from in-person sessions and 106 from remote sessions. Learners rated both formats very highly, with all average scores above 4.85 on a 5-point Likert scale. However, in-person simulation received statistically higher ratings on 4 of 5 key questions, including overall educational value, relevance to training, helpfulness of staff, and perceived impact on practice. The recommendation question also favored in-person simulation, though not significantly.

The authors conclude that remote simulation is feasible and still provides educational value, especially during emergencies like the pandemic. They note that it may also be useful for programs without access to a simulation center or for global health partnerships. Still, they found that in-person simulation remains the preferred format and slightly better overall.
