Pdf Summary
This study examined regional and racial patterns, along with outcomes, among U.S. adults hospitalized for osteomyelitis using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 2016–2017. A total of 116,630 hospitalizations were included.

Admissions were distributed across regions as follows: South 40.3%, Midwest 21.3%, West 19.4%, and Northeast 18.8%. Mean age varied slightly by region, ranging from 57 years in the South to 60 years in the Northeast. Racial composition also differed significantly by region. White patients made up the largest proportion in all regions, especially the Midwest and Northeast, while the South had higher proportions of Black and Hispanic patients, and the West had the highest proportions of Hispanic, Asian, and Native patients.

Overall inpatient mortality was low at 0.5%. After adjustment for confounders, there were no statistically significant regional differences in mortality. Similarly, no significant regional variation was found for sepsis, septic shock, or endocarditis. The Midwest had a significantly shorter mean length of stay by about 1 day compared with other regions.

The study concluded that although osteomyelitis hospitalizations show clear regional and racial differences in patient distribution, these differences do not translate into meaningful variation in in-hospital mortality or major complications across U.S. regions. The main regional difference observed was a shorter hospital stay in the Midwest.
