Rapid-Lhs: A New Model for Academic-Operational Collaboration to Expand Learning Health System Capacity
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document describes RAPID-LHS, a new Vanderbilt University Medical Center program created to strengthen learning health system (LHS) capacity through academic-operational collaboration. The program was developed to address common health system challenges in implementing improvements, including tailoring interventions to local settings, creating implementation plans, accessing data analytics, and disseminating findings.

RAPID-LHS stands for “Realizing Accelerated Progress, Investigation, Implementation, and Dissemination in Learning Health Systems.” Its model combines academic expertise with operational priorities and is designed to provide efficient support for health system initiatives. The program was developed through strategic planning, needs assessment, leadership engagement, and a process for identifying and prioritizing projects. It is co-funded by VUMC institutional support and an AHRQ/PCORI P30 LHS Center grant.

Key features of the model include a review panel of senior academic and operational leaders, a structured project prioritization process, flexible service pathways ranging from one-time consultations to deeper collaborations, and dedicated support for project management, data acquisition, and statistical analysis. The program also emphasizes experiential training by involving faculty and trainees in real-world health system work.

Lessons learned suggest that RAPID-LHS is an effective and efficient infrastructure model for advancing LHS goals. Success depends on prioritizing health system needs, involving leaders, maintaining clear workflows, and ensuring projects include both academic and health system personnel. Challenges include deciding how many projects to support and whether to build depth in a few initiatives or breadth across many areas. The program also stresses the importance of focusing each collaboration on a single deliverable and having a process to end projects appropriately.
