Quality of Life in Post-Tuberculosis Sequelae Patients: An Observational Study
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This cross-sectional study from AIIMS, New Delhi assessed quality of life (QoL) in 90 adults with post-tuberculosis (post-TB) sequelae. Although all patients had completed TB treatment, most remained symptomatic: 93.3% had current symptoms, and shortness of breath was the most common (74.4%). Nearly all patients had abnormal pulmonary function tests (96.8%), with mixed ventilatory defects being the most frequent pattern. Chest radiographs were also abnormal in most patients (92.3%), showing substantial structural lung damage.<br /><br />QoL was measured using two validated tools: the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) and the Seattle Obstructive Lung Disease Questionnaire (SOLQ). Patients with chest pain had the worst overall QoL on SGRQ, followed closely by those with shortness of breath. On SOLQ, chest pain was associated with the greatest impairment in emotional function, coping, and treatment satisfaction, while shortness of breath was linked to poorer physical function. The study also found a significant negative correlation between SGRQ and SOLQ domains, indicating that worse respiratory health was strongly associated with poorer quality of life.<br /><br />Overall, the study highlights that post-TB sequelae are common and clinically important, causing persistent respiratory symptoms, abnormal imaging and lung function, and substantial QoL impairment even after “successful” TB treatment. The authors recommend that patients suspected of having post-TB sequelae be referred to higher-level centers for appropriate evaluation and management.
