This prospective randomized controlled trial evaluated a mobile educational video intervention for hospitalized patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) or type 2 diabetes (T2DM) at an urban safety net hospital. Of 124 screened patients admitted from September 2021 to October 2022, 60 were randomized to watch a disease-specific video and complete a quiz and survey, while 64 controls completed the quiz and survey without the video. Outcomes included quiz performance, patient satisfaction, health confidence, education level, and readmission rates, with between-group analyses performed in Stata.<br /><br />The intervention group scored significantly higher on the comprehension quiz than the control group (71.70% vs 56.32%, p=0.001), indicating improved disease knowledge after watching the educational video. Satisfaction scores were high in both groups and did not differ significantly (86.20% vs 87.20%, p=0.398). Among CHF patients, the intervention group showed lower odds of readmission at 60 days and 120 days, but these differences were not statistically significant. When stratified by education level, the positive effect of the video on quiz scores remained significant only among patients with a high school education (p=0.007), suggesting the intervention may be more effective for this subgroup.<br /><br />Overall, the study found that mobile patient education videos can improve chronic disease knowledge among hospitalized patients with CHF or T2DM. However, the intervention did not significantly affect satisfaction or readmission rates. The authors suggest that future educational tools should be optimized for patients with lower education levels and tailored to the needs of medically underserved populations.
