Pocus Curriculum for App Students

Pdf Summary
This poster describes the development of a new point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum for advanced practice provider (APP) students rotating in Hospital Medicine. POCUS is increasingly important in hospital care and is widely incorporated into medical school and physician residency training, but APP programs have generally lagged behind despite evidence that APPs can use ultrasound accurately. The authors identify limited APP training as a major barrier to broader POCUS adoption.

To build the curriculum, the team reviewed existing POCUS education literature and identified key effective teaching elements: small-group learning, didactic instruction, hands-on practice, and clear learning objectives. Using these best practices, they created a six-week curriculum that included lectures on core ultrasound concepts and weekly one-on-one scanning sessions with ultrasound faculty for real-time practice and feedback.

The program also assessed student retention and interest after completion. In the initial pilot, five APP students participated; all completed the pre-survey and four completed the post-survey. Early results showed increased comfort level and perceived knowledge of POCUS among all participants. Students also reported that the training would make them more likely to use POCUS in future practice.

The authors conclude that this curriculum provides APP students with a strong foundation in POCUS that can support future clinical use. Although the initial feedback is promising, the sample size is very small and more data are needed. Future plans include adding more hands-on scanning time, measuring knowledge objectively with pre- and post-tests, assessing skill retention, and potentially expanding the curriculum to practicing APPs in Hospital Medicine.
