Pediatric Hospitalist Comfort With Teaching Method ...
Pediatric Hospitalist Comfort With Teaching Methods: A Peer Observation Study
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study evaluated whether a peer observation program could improve pediatric hospitalists’ comfort with teaching methods and their perceived use of those methods during clinical rounds. Effective teaching strategies are often learned through experience rather than formal training, and peer observation may provide feedback and reinforcement to improve teaching quality.

A prospective study was conducted at a tertiary pediatric hospital from July 2022 to July 2023. Eligible hospitalists completed pre- and post-program surveys rating their comfort and perceived frequency of use for 11 teaching methods on a Likert scale. The program included a preliminary teaching-methods session, observation of three rounds by peers across three experience tiers, and a post-round debrief.

Thirty-one of 48 eligible participants completed the program. Across 93 observations, comfort improved in 10 of 11 teaching methods, with 8 showing statistically significant gains. Improvements were seen across all experience tiers. In contrast, perceived frequency of use changed little overall, although all 11 methods showed some increase and 4 reached statistical significance.

The main conclusion is that peer observation can meaningfully increase hospitalists’ comfort using a wide range of teaching strategies, even if it does not substantially change how often they believe they use them. The authors suggest that this kind of evaluative observation may help create a more effective learning environment on rounds by making attending physicians more confident in their teaching skills.
