Patient and Nurse Attitudes Toward Continuous Remote Vital Sign Monitoring During Hospitalization

This pilot study examined whether a wearable vital sign monitoring device, the FDA-cleared Caretaker-4, could replace overnight manual vital sign checks on a neurosciences hospital unit and potentially improve patient sleep and comfort.<br /><br />The motivation was that hospital sleep is often poor, and frequent overnight interruptions—especially for routine vital signs—can contribute to worse outcomes. The device continuously measured blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and temperature while patients still received standard nurse-collected vitals in parallel.<br /><br />The study enrolled 21 English-speaking adult patients and 15 nurses over two months. Patients wore the device for 1–3 nights and then completed questionnaires, as did their nurses. Overall, both groups responded positively. Patients generally preferred remote monitoring over being awakened for manual checks and did not find the device very uncomfortable, although comfort ratings were neutral on average. Nurses reported that the device did not interfere with their daily work and could be more efficient.<br /><br />In terms of measurement accuracy, average differences between nurse and device readings were small and often clinically negligible. However, the variability was substantial, meaning that individual readings could differ enough to matter in practice. This suggests that while the device shows promise, its inconsistency is still a barrier to routine clinical use.<br /><br />The authors conclude that wearable vital sign monitoring may reduce overnight sleep disruption and improve workflow, but larger studies, alternative devices, and a randomized controlled trial are needed to better evaluate sleep benefits and clinical reliability.
