Pdf Summary
This study examined whether patient satisfaction is linked to hospital quality and safety across U.S. acute care hospitals. The authors queried five databases—Google, Leapfrog, Hospital Compare, U.S. News, and Healthgrades—from February 1 to October 3, 2023. They collected measures of patient experience, hospital ratings, quality scores, and safety scores. Specialty, pediatric, critical access hospitals, and hospitals lacking data in any of the five sources were excluded. Hospitals with different names across databases were matched using physical address.

Out of 3,871 hospitals in the American Hospital Directory, 2,384 met inclusion criteria. The average hospital had 197 beds and 7,754 yearly discharges. Patient experience indicators included Leapfrog safety ratings, Hospital Compare star ratings for quality, safety, and patient experience, U.S. News regional ranking and patient experience scores, and the percentage of 9/10 ratings on Healthgrades.

Using one-way ANOVA, the authors found significant differences in patient experience across patient safety ratings, with all comparisons reaching statistical significance (P<0.001) except Google reviews in relation to U.S. News ranking. Overall, hospitals with higher quality and safety ratings tended to have better patient experience scores. The correlations between different patient experience sources varied, suggesting that some measures tracked each other more closely than others.

The authors conclude that in acute care hospitals, better patient perceptions are associated with higher quality and safety ratings. This supports the idea that patient experience reflects broader hospital performance and may be a useful indicator of quality and safety.
