Pdf Summary
This study examined whether hospitalized patients have enough free time and enough interest to participate in an inpatient Whole Health program, which includes non-traditional supports such as massage, meditation, yoga, aromatherapy, music interventions, and sacred moments/connections.

Researchers conducted 115 hours of direct observations in two hospitals, recording patient and clinician activity in 15-minute blocks between 8 AM and 5 PM. They also completed seven qualitative interviews with patients who had recently been hospitalized to learn about their interest in Whole Health services.

Results showed that patients often had substantial “available” time during hospital stays, especially in the late afternoon when availability ranged from 50% to 100%. Interviewed patients said they were interested in Whole Health and believed it could be helpful. Reported benefits included reducing stress and filling idle time. All interviewed patients expressed interest in receiving Whole Health services while hospitalized.

When asked about specific services, patients were least interested in meditation, acupuncture, and yoga. The most desired services were massage therapy, music interventions, sacred moments/connections, and aromatherapy.

Overall, the findings suggest that many hospitalized patients have both the time and the interest to participate in Whole Health activities, supporting the feasibility of bringing these services into inpatient care. The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Michigan, the VA, and related departments, with funding from AHRQ.
