Pdf Summary
This project describes a new inpatient mobility protocol designed to improve patient movement while avoiding unnecessary PT/OT consults. Background: Better hospital mobility is associated with improved outcomes, but prior mobility initiatives have sometimes led to overuse of physical and occupational therapy services. Aim: The team set a goal of increasing mobility compliance on selected adult medicine pilot units to 75% by December 2023. Intervention: They implemented the Admission Mobility Physician Approved Protocol (AMPAP), which included: - Three mobility occurrences every 24 hours for all patients without bedrest orders - Automatic PT/OT consult option for patients with “6-Clicks” scores between 10 and 17 - Addition of the AMPAC “6-Clicks” tool to the physician admission order set Results and conclusion: The protocol increased inpatient mobility and reduced inappropriate PT/OT consults. Overall mobility compliance reached 75.07%, meeting the project aim. In particular, inappropriate PT/OT consults in the emergency department dropped substantially, while overall PT/OT caseloads stayed stable. In summary, the AMPAP improved compliance with mobility expectations and helped reserve PT/OT resources for patients who were most likely to benefit.
