This study examined the impact of COVID-19 on hospitalized patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in the United States during 2020, using the AHRQ National Inpatient Sample database. The researchers compared STEMI patients with and without COVID-19 infection to assess mortality, hospital resource use, and cardiac care delivery.<br /><br />The main finding was that STEMI patients with COVID-19 had much worse outcomes. The study found disparities in outcomes as well: Hispanic patients, African Americans, and individuals with lower household income had higher inpatient mortality when hospitalized with both STEMI and COVID-19.<br /><br />The authors suggest that the increased mortality likely reflects both direct effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection and broader disruptions in healthcare delivery during the pandemic, such as altered reperfusion strategies, resource shortages, and delays in care. Limitations included possible detection and selection bias.<br /><br />Overall, the study highlights the need for better systems to ensure timely, effective STEMI care during pandemics and other healthcare emergencies.
