This Mayo Clinic initiative focused on improving the transition back to internal medicine residency for birthing parents after maternity leave. The team performed a stakeholder analysis of residents at Mayo Clinic Rochester who were birthing parents during the 2023–2024 academic year, using discussion, memoing, and brainstorming to identify key challenges and opportunities for support.<br /><br />Stakeholders commonly described stress, loneliness, and confusion about the return-to-work process. Based on these findings, the team identified five major domains for intervention: childcare, online support groups, lactation, postpartum healthcare, and togetherness.<br /><br />An electronic resource document was created to address each domain. The childcare section includes information on childcare options, back-up childcare, and sick childcare. The online support groups section highlights social media groups and local communities where residents can ask questions and seek peer support. The lactation section provides information about hospital and clinic lactation locations, milk storage areas, and practical tips for breastfeeding during residency. The postpartum care section lists free therapy options, pelvic floor physical therapy, and local in-person resources to support recovery and self-care. The togetherness section includes motivational quotes and shared experiences from prior resident mothers to foster encouragement and connection.<br /><br />The project aims to reduce unnecessary stress, loneliness, and confusion during the transition from maternity leave back to training. The document will be updated regularly as stakeholder needs and available resources change.
