Open Evidence Dictation and Its Impact on Clinician Workflow Quality and Outcomes
Back to course
Pdf Summary
Lakeland Regional Health’s Internal Medicine team presented a prospective controlled quality improvement study evaluating whether OpenEvidence, an AI-enabled voice dictation tool, can reduce documentation burden and improve workflow for inpatient clinicians. The project was motivated by growing concerns that documentation contributes significantly to clinician workload and burnout, while AI-assisted tools may streamline note writing and improve completeness.

The study compares standard manual documentation with OpenEvidence dictation on inpatient internal medicine services. It uses a baseline pre-intervention phase followed by a three-month intervention phase in which participating clinicians use OpenEvidence for all SOAP and history & physical notes. About 300 patient encounters from 20 to 25 clinicians will be analyzed.

The primary outcome is average time needed to complete a patient note. Secondary outcomes include clinician satisfaction, coding queries, coding levels, time spent with patients, and hospital length of stay. The goal is to assess whether OpenEvidence improves efficiency, documentation quality, and clinician experience while preserving patient-centered outcomes.

Overall, the project aims to determine whether AI-assisted dictation can meaningfully reduce charting burden, enhance workflow efficiency, and support better coding accuracy without negatively affecting patient care. The findings may help guide broader adoption of AI documentation tools in medical education and hospital systems.
