Novel Gamification Modules Improved Interpretation of Acid Base Status and Right Heart Catheterization Hemodynamics
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This project describes two novel online gamification modules, built with the free Godot game engine, designed to improve medical learners’ understanding of right heart catheterization hemodynamics and acid-base interpretation. Unlike traditional gamified medical education, which often relies on one-time sessions, these modules were created as reusable, self-directed learning tools with both an interactive didactic component and an endless practice-question generator that provides immediate feedback.

Before starting cardiology or pulmonary rotations, residents and medical students completed pre-module surveys assessing demographics, confidence (via Likert scale), and competence (via multiple-choice questions). Learners then used either the right heart catheterization module or the acid-base module, followed by post-module assessment.

Results showed meaningful gains in both confidence and performance. For the right heart catheterization module (n=16), confidence increased across all domains by 50% or more, and quiz scores improved by 43.3% (from 55.0 to 78.8). For the acid-base module (n=11), confidence rose by at least 30% in each area, and quiz scores increased by 33.4% (from 54.5 to 72.7).

Overall, the study suggests that accessible, interactive, repeatable gamification tools can enhance self-directed learning and improve both confidence and competence in interpreting complex cardiopulmonary and acid-base data. The authors propose expanding this digital learning format to more topics as medical education continues shifting toward online primary resources.
