Nothing but Net: A Novel Approach to Efficient and Effective Teaching Rounds
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document describes “NET Rounding,” a bundled intervention designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of inpatient Internal Medicine teaching rounds. At the authors’ institution, residents spent an average of 3.4 hours per day on rounds, but both residents and attendings often viewed rounds as inefficient and low value.

To address this, a task force of Internal Medicine residents and Hospital Medicine faculty identified nine best-practice strategies grouped into three categories. These strategies were combined into a practical rounding framework, supported by a pocket card for tracking rounding times and a QR code linking to FAQs. The intervention was piloted from March to May 2021.

Implementation feedback was strong. All residents (32/32) and most attendings (42/45, 93%) reported using NET Rounding strategies on at least half of their rotation days. Most participants reported a positive or very positive impact on their experience: 90% of residents and 73% of attendings. Daily surveys also captured qualitative comments highlighting improved efficiency, clearer structure, teamwork, and shared goals.

Overall, the study concludes that a resident-faculty task force successfully created and implemented a rounding intervention that was widely adopted and well received. NET Rounding appears to improve the organization of rounds and contribute to a better wards experience for both learners and teachers.
