Pdf Summary
This document describes an effort at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to reduce “silos” in quality improvement education and practice by creating a combined methodology framework.

In current health care training, professionals are often taught different improvement methods, which can leave multidisciplinary teams using different terms and approaches during improvement work. Hospitalists are seen as well positioned to help align these efforts across teams.

The purpose of the project was to develop, disseminate, and coach the use of a single process improvement framework that incorporates the different methodologies used by team members.

To build the framework, the authors combined several common improvement models: DMAIC, LEAN, The Improvement Model, and the Evidence-Based Practice Improvement Model. The result was a framework designed to show how these methods fit together and can be used in a coordinated way to improve care.

The framework was then applied by hospitalist leaders working with multidisciplinary experts in improvement projects, graduate medical education quality improvement education, and hospitalist faculty development.

The main conclusion is that a combined methodology framework can help align multidisciplinary team members who have been trained in different improvement approaches. The next step is to evaluate improvement outcomes to assess the framework’s success and consider broader use in multidisciplinary health education.
